CCNY BEAT+ Capstone Program

BEAT+: Adding Branding and Entrepreneurship for Real-World  Applications Using Emerging Technologies

Description

Starting in 2011, the CS/CpE/EE joint senior design program built on our existing the six-credit capstone/senior design course structure in CS, CpE and EE, but with a new concentration on assistive technologies for people in need. For nine years, over 200 students graduated from our joint program. In Fall 2019, supported by the CCNY CEN Course Innovation Grant from Moxie Foundation, we at the Grove School of Engineering worked with the Branding + Integrated Communications (BIC) Creative Track in the Media and Communication Department and Zahn Innovation Center to push our Assistive Technology program to a new level, leading to BEAT: Branding and Entrepreneurship of Assistive Technology for Social Good. The current CCNY BEAT+ Program is an extended version of BEAT, by broadening the scope of both real world applications and emerging technologies. BEAT+ emphasizes four components: Branding, Entrepreneurship, Applications, and Technologies. Undergraduate Seniors in CS and CpE work in teams to design emerging technical solutions in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Augmented and Virtual Reality (AR/VR), Assistive Technology (AT), data analytics and app development skills to solve real-world application problems for social good and national priorities. Teams learn basic branding principles (how to design user interfaces and communicate with end users and community partners about their technical solutions) and basics of entrepreneurship (customer discovery, business models, etc.). Teams are encouraged to participate in academic research projects, the CCNY Zahn Innovation competitions and NYSID’s CREATE competition. We invite collaborators from both academia and industry as the BEAT+ mentors and evaluators. Students are expected to learn new software/hardware tools and skills by doing their projects. We have work with multiple partners on Assistive Technology, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Surveillance and Security, and Inclusive Urban Space, and look forward to new applications and partnerships.

The BEAT+ Capstone projects are current supported by CEN Course Innovation Grant from Moxie Foundation, the CCNY Zahn Innovation Center and NYSID CREATE Program. Past projects have been supported by NSF GARDE Program for Course Development on Assistive Technology to Aid Visually Impaired People (Award #1160046), VentureWell (formerly NCIIA) Course and Program Grant on Human and Machine Intelligence – Perception, Computation and Action (#10087-12).
